Marvel Month-to-Month Sales: November 2012

PinExt Marvel Month to Month Sales: November 2012

all new x men 2 561 Marvel Month to Month Sales: November 2012
By Paul O’Brien

While the Marvel Now! relaunch programme got under way in October, November saw it in full swing, with the first issue of ALL-NEW X-MEN, new creative teams (and new numbering) on HULK, IRON MAN, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, X-MEN LEGACY, FANTASTIC FOUR and FF, and a new direction for JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY. With all the issue #1s supported by extensive promotion, the chart is turned upside down.

You won’t be surprised to hear that this gives Marvel the largest share of the North American direct market in November, leading DC by 40% to 33% in units and a rather closer 34% to 30% in dollars.

Thanks as always to ICV2.com for giving us permission to use these figures.

1,11. ALL-NEW X-MEN
11/12 All-New X-Men #1 - 181,693
11/12 All-New X-Men #2 - 96,436 (-46.9%)

You could make a strong case for this being a continuation of UNCANNY X-MEN, which ended last month, but since another UNCANNY X-MEN series is due to launch in the new year, I’m treating this one as the new title. For comparison, though, UNCANNY X-MEN was regularly doing around 60K, and when it last relaunched (in, um, November 2011) the first issue did 109,911. So this is doing rather better.

Another view would be that this book is effectively replacing X-MEN, which is about to be cancelled with issue #41. That book does around 30K at the moment, so if you want to draw that comparison, Marvel are trading up quite decisively.

All of the Marvel Now! first issues are heavily supported by variant covers and retailer incentives, and since the whole point of such things is to encourage retailers to order more copies than they otherwise would, the first issue sales do need to be treated with a certain degree of caution. Substantial drops on the second issues are only to be expected where these methods are used.

But thanks to Marvel’s double-shipping programme, we actually do have sales on the November chart for several of the second issues, and we can see that even those sales show a very substantial improvement. There will still be a lot of settling down to do over the next few months, but all signs this month are very good.

Just one issue this month, but it’s pretty clear that the new series is off to a strong start. Realistically, we’ll have to wait to see the sales on more typical issues to say anything much more than that.

Surprising to see DEADPOOL come in so high, when some of Marvel’s big names were also being relaunched this month with more established creative teams attached. But the series has been well received and if it can sustain anything like the sales it’s achieved with its second issue, the relaunch will have done it the world of good.

5. INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK

Again, just a first issue here, so it’s hard to read too much into this. It might be pointed out that the last relaunch – just last October – opened with estimated orders of 106,472 and didn’t hold on to them for very long. But that was because it had a 50% overship on its first two issues. I don’t expect to see that repeated on this series.

6,20. IRON MAN

11/08 Iron Man v5 #7 - 49,356

Another massive increase from previous sales, even on the second issue. These numbers are actually pretty similar to the launch of the last volume – it managed 120K on its first issue and 76K on the second. But that was four years ago.

7. FANTASTIC FOUR
11/07 Fantastic Four #551 - 58,617

1 year ( +55.2%)
2 year (+175.5%)
3 year (+190.4%)
4 year ( +86.7%)

Again, huge sales increase, but we’ll have to wait for the second issue sales to put a bit more context on it.

8. UNCANNY AVENGERS
10/12 Uncanny Avengers #1 - 303,722
11/12 Uncanny Avengers #2 - 114,257 (-62.4%)

In percentage terms, that’s an enormous second issue drop – but when the first issue has such an outrageous number of variant covers, that’s going to happen. Even after that drop, UNCANNY AVENGERS is still comfortably over the 100K mark, and that’s the really significant thing here.

10,22. THOR: GOD OF THUNDER

Another relaunch, and another case where the second issue remains miles up from previous sales. (Those percentage comparisons with past years are based on the second issue, by the way, since it’s the most recent.)

For comparison, the last time THOR was relaunched, in 2011, the first two issues had estimated orders of 82K and 50K.

Though it’s officially a relaunch of X-MEN LEGACY – and I’m treating it as such – this is to all intents and purposes a new book. Specifically, it’s a solo title for minor character Legion, which isn’t the most obviously commercial premise. Unsurprisingly, then, it comes in behind the bigger titles – but it still sees a big sales increase for its new direction.

This is the start of the build towards the SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN relaunch, and issue #698 is also bolstered by a variant cover. Considering that there’s still an anniversary issue and the relaunch proper to come, this sort of sales increase looks like a very positive sign.

The FANTASTIC FOUR companion title comes in some way behind the parent, but that’s only to be expected; this has been clearly positioned as the more quirky book, and besides, sales are still way up from the inherited level. The two titles are actually being collected in the same trade paperbacks, so it might be that there will turn out to be a closer connection between the two titles than first appears.

A typical second issue drop for the Marvel Now books, and I’d say this still counts as a good number for what is essentially a self-contained anthology title.

The monthly drops are surely too high for comfort, even though the book has plenty of margin. It’s heading towards a crossover with AGE OF APOCALYPSE and X-TREME X-MEN, though that’s not exactly company I’d be thrilled about keeping, given the dire sales on those books.

82. WOLVERINE MAX
10/12 Wolverine: Max #1 - 37,509
11/12 Wolverine: Max #2 - 27,217 (-27.4%)

For an out-of-continuity Max imprint title, these numbers are actually quite decent.

Another Point One issue that seems to have sold like a regular edition, which I suppose is a step in the right direction. You’ve got to give it to Marvel, they’ve certainly stuck with this idea.

This is the first issue of the book’s new direction as a Sif solo title. A debut at 23K is plainly not at all promising, and begs the question of why Marvel have elected not to give this book a fresh issue #1 when the complete change of lead character and creative team would plainly have justified it. Granted, it’s hard to imagine the book ever being a major player, but you have to think it would have done better than this.

11/12 MU v Avengers #2 of 4 - 21,949 (-20.6%)

Reasonably decent for an out-of-continuity miniseries. By cutting back on these projects, Marvel may have helped the ones that remain to stand out a bit more.

Attention !!

Marvel Month to Month Sales: December 2012
02/08/2013 by The Beat Leave a Comment
amazing700ditko 02 Marvel Month to Month Sales: December 2012by Paul O’Brien

The second month of Marvel Now titles arguably makes for more interesting sales data than the first. We’re starting to get a sense of where some of the books that had huge launch numbers in November are actually going to settle down. And we’re also seeing how the second-tier Marvel Now books are going to fare, with this month seeing the launches of CABLE & X-FORCE, THUNDERBOLTS and AVENGERS ARENA, as well as the relaunch of AVENGERS itself.

As usual, Marvel had the largest share of the North American direct market, though not by the widest of margins – they led DC by 36% to 35% in terms of units, and 33% to 30% in dollars.

Thanks as always to ICv2.com for permission to use these figures.

Three issues this month, including the much-hyped “final” issue #700, before the book relaunches as SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN in January. The death of Peter Parker (disclaimer: death may not be permanent) once again attracted a surprising amount of mainstream media coverage, particularly considering that it’s not been that long since they did this with Ultimate Spider-Man. But the results speak for themselves, with issue #700 achieving a number higher than any other Marvel Now book with the exception of UNCANNY AVENGERS #1.

Issue #699.1 tails in some way behind the other two issues, but that’s to be expected – it’s normal for Point One books, and besides, it’s really a prologue issue for January’s MORBIUS title.

AVENGERS relaunches under Jonathan Hickman, and as the major book of the month, it gets one of the largest Marvel Now debut numbers (beating all of last month’s books). The combined effect of the usual second issue drop plus the aggressive deployment of variant covers leads to a hefty 50% drop for issue #2, but that still places the book significantly up on its inherited sales.

3,29. CABLE & X-FORCE
12/12 Cable & X-Force #1 - 90,334
12/12 Cable & X-Force #2 - 57,719 (-36.1%)

The first of two new X-Force books which seem to have no connection beyond sharing a name. This is the one with Cable leading a group of characters on the run. The other, a relaunch of UNCANNY X-FORCE, will be on the January chart.

Given the heavy use of variant covers on issue #1, the second issue drop is really not bad at all.

9,11. ALL-NEW X-MEN
11/12 All-New X-Men #1 - 181,693
11/12 All-New X-Men #2 - 96,436 (-46.9%)
12/12 All-New X-Men #3 - 83,798 (-13.1%)
12/12 All-New X-Men #4 - 80,665 ( -3.7%)

On its way out of the top ten already, which is a little bit of a surprise – but sales are leveling out at a number which is clearly going to be more than acceptable.

I’m treating this as a new title rather than as a continuation of previous flagship UNCANNY X-MEN (since there’s going to be another book of that title along in February), but for comparison, it was generally in the mid 50K range before the AVX crossover kicked in.

10,38. THUNDERBOLTS

12/08 Thunderbolts #127 - 36,378

1 year (+140.5%)
2 year ( +82.1%)
3 year ( +69.9%)
4 year ( +39.9%)
5 year ( --- )

A slightly odd one, this – the previous volume of THUNDERBOLTS was retitled DARK AVENGERS with issue #175 and is still continuing the same stories, while this is a completely new team reusing the Thunderbolts’ name. But with some hesitation I’m going to treat this as the successor to earlier versions of THUNDERBOLTS.

A launch number of 83K is in similar territory to what THOR managed last year, so a pretty clear indication that the Marvel Now! brand is elevating books that otherwise wouldn’t be expected to deliver sales in this range.

19,50. AVENGERS ARENA
12/12 Avengers Arena #1 - 64,626
12/12 Avengers Arena #2 - 43,014 (-33.4%)

Ah, the controversial one. This is a book which has divided opinion. Or at least, it’s a premise which divided opinion. Or maybe it’s an advertising campaign which has divided opinion. Regardless, there are opinions, and they are divided most sorely.

I’m treating this as a new title because, although it replaces AVENGERS ACADEMY on the schedule, the actual concept is drastically different. But for comparison, ACADEMY was selling in the low 20K range, and launched in June 2010 with an estimated 46K.

20. CAPTAIN AMERICA

Another hefty drop for the second issue, but about on a par with the other major launches – this was always likely to be the result of using variant covers so extensively on the first issues.

Another one that seems to be levelling out quite fast now that the initial drops are out of the way – though it should be noted that it did ship two issues in December, and when that happens, retailers sometimes seem to make the larger cuts within a month. These figures are pretty similar to those for the book’s last relaunch back in 2008, which was at 58K with its fourth issue.

The size of the drop is typical for a Marvel Now second issue, and sales remain significantly improved. It looks like the book will settle down to the levels it was achieving four or five years ago, but Marvel ought to be happy enough with that.

Hmm. X-MEN LEGACY is already back to the sales that the previous volume was achieving during the AVENGERS VS X-MEN crossover, and has an unusually high drop for the third issue. But then again, compared to its compatriots, it had an unusually low drop for the second, besides which the book is now a Legion solo title without big name creators attached, making this a very respectable number in absolute terms.

This book seems to be effectively in the “series of miniseries” format, though unusually it’s just continuing its numbering. The solicitation for issue #10 described it as the start of the “final arc”.

And bringing up the rear, the usual clutch of adaptations and all-ages books, none of which are expected to survive on the strength of direct market sales anyway.

Marvel Month to Month Sales: January 2013
by Paul O’Brien

The rolling program of Marvel Now! relaunches continued in January, with SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, NEW AVENGERS, SAVAGE WOLVERINE, UNCANNY X-FORCE, YOUNG AVENGERS and MORBIUS. Plus, there’s the miniseries DEADPOOL: KILLUSTRATED – and, just as interesting as the January launches, the continuing question of how the earlier Marvel Now titles are settling down.

Once again, Marvel had the largest share of the North American direct market, leading DC by 40% to 35% in units, and 35% to 32% in dollars.

Thanks as always to ICV2.com for permission to use these figures.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN is this month’s flagship launch, and while it doesn’t quite match the sales of December’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700 – which, after all, was the really key issue – the first two issues still put in an impressive showing. Although sales are likely to settle down to a lower figure, the storyline is clearly one that’s grabbed a lot of attention. After all, while you can view it as an attention grabbing stunt, you can also view it as a good old fashioned Silver Age superhero hook. Much worse things happened to Clark Kent back in the day.

There’s also a lot of reorder activity on this title. In fact, the same goes for several of the Marvel Now launches, which has to be a good sign for the whole line. In the case of this title, issue #700 adds a further 9,988 copies; issue #699 adds a further 5,144; issue #698 is up by 6,195; and even the Point One issue, which was actually Morbius’ origin story, piles on a further 5,099. As usual, I’ve added those extra sales into the figures above.

Following December’s relaunch of AVENGERS, here’s the B-title, also written by Jonathan Hickman. In fact, this is more of an Illuminati title; as we’ll see, Marvel’s latest marketing brainstorm seems to be to simply attach the same name to several unrelated teams. AVENGERS #1 came in at 187K, so this is quite some distance behind – but then, it is firmly the B-title.

6. SAVAGE WOLVERINE
01/13 Savage Wolverine #1 - 102,530

An ongoing title with Frank Cho writing and drawing the opening arc. You could, of course, view this as a continuation of WOLVERINE, but since there’s another book called WOLVERINE launching shortly, I’m treating this has the extra title. For comparison, though, the previous WOLVERINE title was generally selling in the mid-30K range, so this is a huge increase. This would also have posted a big gain over any year-to-year comparison since 2008.

7. UNCANNY AVENGERS
10/12 Uncanny Avengers #1 - 303,722
11/12 Uncanny Avengers #2 - 114,257 (-62.4%)
12/12 ---
01/13 Uncanny Avengers #3 - 92,165 (-19.3%)

When a book launches as stratospherically as UNCANNY AVENGERS did, it’s inevitable that there will be steep drops over the next couple of issues while retailers figure out the book’s regular sales level. Estimated orders of 92K for issue #3 is still an excellent number to be delivering.

9,11. AVENGERS
01/11 Avengers v4 #9 - 64,867
=====
01/12 Avengers v4 #21 - 54,803 ( -4.1%)

06/12 Avengers v4 #27 - 68,885 ( +1.7%)
07/12 Avengers v4 #28 - 63,169 ( -8.3%)
08/12 Avengers v4 #29 - 61,653 ( -2.4%)
09/12 Avengers v4 #30 - 58,609 ( -4.9%)
10/12 Avengers v4 #31 - 62,495 ( +6.6%)
10/12 Avengers v4 #32 - 56,204 ( -10.1%)
11/12 Avengers v4 #33 - 53,336 ( -5.1%)
11/12 Avengers v4 #34 - 57,315 ( +7.5%)
12/12 Avengers v5 #1 - 186,989 (+226.2%)

01/13 Avengers v5 #3 - 92,165 ( -6.9%)
01/13 Avengers v5 #4 - 83,088 ( -9.8%)
6 mnth ( +31.5%)
1 year ( +51.6%)
2 year ( +28.1%)

Again, still finding its level. Issue #3 had rather more variant covers than #4, so the overall trend is smoother than it first appears. Also, issue #2 picks up reorders of 5,134, added into the figures above.

10. UNCANNY X-FORCE

There’s no connection between this book and December’s launch CABLE & X-FORCE besides the name. Of the two titles, this is the one that inherits characters and storylines from Rick Remender’s run, and in an earlier time would simply have been a new creative team coming aboard a continuing series. But you’ve got to admit that they wouldn’t have got this sort of sales boost by taking that route.

Yes, sales went up for issue #6. It doesn’t seem to be due to variants, and I’d be surprised if incoming artist David Marquez had that sort of impact, which seems to leave the explanation that people just like the book. There are re-orders too, with issue #3 adding another 6,363 and issue #4 adding 6,012.

Yes, it’s been that long since YOUNG AVENGERS shipped in a January. The book still has a fan base, though, and so do creators Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie, who worked together on PHONOGRAM. A strong debut for a property that’s been allowed to drift for a surprisingly long time.

A similar deal with both these titles. Now into their third months, they’re levelling out at a number that Marvel ought to be very happy with, considering sales over the last couple of years. Both have been higher in the past, but that was when it were the main focus of Marvel’s promotion, while here they’re simply benefiting from the promotion of the line as a whole.

Another book that’s swiftly levelling out, at numbers far above what it was delivering before. And there are reorders – issue #1 adds 4,330, and #2 gets 4,636.

Considering the first issue sales were probably a bit exaggerated, this is settling down reasonably well. If you want to draw comparisons with the previous, unrelated X-FORCE book, then it’s going to come off worse – but as the secondary X-Force title, that’s probably not going to cause too much concern.

There’s no obvious reason for the drop to have increased again with issue #5. Most likely, this is an example of a common phenomenon with titles that ship two issues a month, where the bigger drops take place between months.

Sales are now back to roughly the level that the previous run was achieving in 2009-10, but those were decent numbers.

This one, on the other hand, does not yet seem to be levelling out – but I attribute that mainly to its having inherited from AVENGERS VS X-MEN an unrealistically high level of sales for an anthology title, given the market’s general lack of interest in such books.

The actual content is a solo title featuring the hitherto relatively minor character Legion – not the most commercial premise.

This is the issue which was changed to feature Hurricane Sandy stories, presumably accounting for the sales bump.

58. DEADPOOL: KILLUSTRATED
01/13 Killustrated #1 of 4 - 36,771

Even this is comfortably ahead of the sales on the previous ongoing DEADPOOL title. Marvel are doing far fewer miniseries these days, evidently preferring to up the frequency of ongoing titles instead – and one side effect is that the minis that do get published are less likely to get lost in the shuffle.

Third month for the Sif series, and it’s not looking too healthy – but thus far, Marvel are sticking with it. The decision not to launch this book with a fresh #1 must have cost it dear.

Not spectacular numbers, but probably better than a continuity-implant story would have done in the days when Marvel had more minis on the shelves.

DARK AVENGERS shipped two issues in January, and only one of them outsold CAPTAIN MARVEL – so technically, this title is not yet in the uncomfortable position of being outsold by a cancelled book. Mind you, it’s close. But Marvel are sticking with the book at the moment; they’ve announced a crossover with AVENGERS ASSEMBLE for May to July.
